Next Monday is when we would normally have our Get Geeky South Bay get together, but it’s the holidays, so we’re going to hold off until January. Go get geeky with your family, because we know they love you for it.
Have a wonderful holiday season everyone. I look forward to starting 2010 off in a geeky way.

As some of us are freelancers without a typical office, I thought I’d share a few local coworking spots in the area. If you aren’t familiar with coworking, there are a few places you can check out for more details. Coworking has been a growing phenomenon all across the globe, with many locations in the U.S. as well.
Over in Los Angeles there is BLANKSPACES. From their site:
Los Angeles’ #1 Coworking office space
Introducing BLANKSPACES, a modern, flexible workspace that inspires creativity, promotes occupational freedom, and builds collaborative communities. A place where well-designed form meets well-appointed function. Available by-the-day, monthly, or year-to-year.
BLANKSPACES is specifically designed to meet your changing professional needs and change the way you think about where you work. Whether you are looking for Office Space or a Virtual Office in Los Angeles, we invite you to Work Wide Open. Take us up on a free trial today!
I’ve tried them out and they are fantastic. They are a bit far for me personally (hint, hint. Open a South Bay location!), but lately I’ve been considering a part-time plan just to get out amongst other creatives.
Another spot, not open yet, is The CoLoft in Santa Monica. From their website:
We are a community driven endeavor that has never really been a fan of the whole “corporate” atmosphere. Stuffy suits, stuffy bosses, and worst of all, stuffy environments.
We believe that work, and work environments, should be enjoyable. Most of us spend more time working than anything else, so why should it be anything but that? That’s why we created the CoLoft. The main theme here is that we work better together, not alone. The CoLoft is a place where you can come in to get some work done, run your business, and converse with like-minded people. It’s a place for entrepreneurs, freelancers, designers, developers, artists, small business owners, and more. At Coloft people come to work, network, and prosper.
Follow BLANKSPACES on Twitter, as well as The Coloft. If there are more, let me know with replies on our Twitter account.
Multi-group holiday event for freelancers. Groups participating include:
- empowerLA
- The Los Angeles Small Business Owners Group
- The Los Angeles Freelance Meetup
- Biznik LA
- Blankspaces
- MarKyr Media

I think this will be #7, but counting has never been my forte. Yes, it’s that time again folks. Our monthly Get Geeky South Bay meetup. We had 2 new faces last month and had a really great time. I’d really love to see some more new faces, so if you are interested at all, come on down!
We are a gathering of geeks, but the term is loosely applied here. We are from diverse backgrounds such as web design, copywriting, 3D graphics, cognitive engineering and more. We are freelancers as well as those still stuck working for the man.
The purpose of the Get Geeky is to bring people from various tech/design/creative pursuits in the south of Los Angeles into one spot to hopefully spur conversation, friendship and work.
Here is a short list of fellow Get Geeky members, starting with myself:
So Monday, November 16, at 7PM, come on over to the Red Car Brewery in Torrance and share a beer with us. No pressure, just a casual gathering of geeks. We meet every month on the 3rd Monday of the month.
We’d love to meet you, so come on out!
Friday, November 13, 2009
How’s that for an uninspiring title?
Mark your planner, Google Calendar, iCal, Outlook or whatever you use. The next Get Geeky is scheduled as usual on the third Monday of the month, and this August it’s the 24th. Time is the same, 7PM to 9PM (or whenever we leave).
The venue is our tried and true Red Car Brewery in Torrance. The Red Car Brewery has fantastic beer, great food and a great setting for a casual get together.
What is the Get Geeky? It’s a casual gathering of creative and technology minded folks in the South Bay Los Angeles area. A place to meet, make friends, start business relationships, hang out. It’s a place to talk shop, with people who might actually understand what you’re saying for a change.
Who are we? So far, we are web designers, copywriters, UI designers, engineers, graphic designers, freelancers and more.
We’d love to see you there. Please RSVP if you can so we can make sure to have enough seating available. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4228846/
Please retweet!

Hey, South Bay Geeks!
We’ve been getting together for a little while now, and it’s time to step it up a little.
Our vision for this group is that of an established community of creativity, expertise and support.
To that end, we want to know what you would like to get out of it.
Guest speakers? Workshops? Job leads? Field trips? Matching tattoos?
What part of your creative/professional life could use some help?
That’s the focus of our next meetup. Be there and tell us what you’re looking for!
Date is Monday July 20
7:00 PM to 9 PM or whenever we get kicked out.
RSVP at Upcoming so we can plan for seating!
