There’s a lot to talk about this month, with Facebook privacy in the news, a possible upcoming iPhone, and more. Come on out and join us!

The Get Geeky is meant to be a casual gathering of ‘geeks’ over beers (or whatever your drink preference is). We’d love to see you there, and love it even more if you brought a friend. The more the geekier!

Changing tactics

The past few Get Geeky’s have been a bit low on turnout. The few of us who do come have a great time discussing everything from Android to copyright law to Apple iPad sales. Unfortunately, this event hasn’t quite become what I’d envisioned, and that’s my own fault. I’m just not a born promoter.

For the Get Geeky to really shine as a great event, we need more people. The more people that we can get to show up, the better it is for all of us (theoretically). So with that in mind, I’m going to try utilizing Meetup.com for our monthly gathering. I’d like feedback on this though.

Would receiving a monthly email reminder be annoying? Is this blog and Twitter enough for you?

March Edition of the Get Geeky!

It’s that time again folks. Come on by the Red Car Brewery tonight at 7PM for some beer, food, and good chats on anything geeky. We are a local group that gathers for fun, no requirements other than you like to chat about things internet/tech/creative. We are freelance designers, copywriters, engineers, and more.

Tonight is our first meeting of the year, and I know we have a couple new faces coming tonight. I’m looking forward to getting out of the rain and sharing a few beers with everyone.

As always, details of the meet are in the sidebar over yonder. 3rd Monday of the month, Red Car Brewery in Torrance. I hope your 2009 ended well, and that 2010 brings you all the happiness it can. 2009 was a big year for geeks and the tech industry as a whole. 2010 looks to be even bigger. We should have plenty to talk about!

This month our Get Geeky lands on the 18th. 7PM to whenever (usually 9ish) at the Red Car Brewery in Torrance. I’m once again considering some alternate venues for this year. If you know of any place in the South Bay, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, etc. that works well for informal gatherings let me know via our Twitter account @southbaygeeks.

Remember, if you know any geeks/creatives/techs that would enjoy the Get Geeky, then by all means let them know!

Now go Get Geeky!

Happy holidays!

Next Monday is when we would normally have our Get Geeky South Bay get together, but it’s the holidays, so we’re going to hold off until January. Go get geeky with your family, because we know they love you for it.

Have a wonderful holiday season everyone. I look forward to starting 2010 off in a geeky way.

If you aren’t familiar with coworking, there are a few places you can check out for more details. Coworking has been a growing phenomenon all across the globe, with many locations in the U.S. as well.

Over in Los Angeles there is BLANKSPACES. From their site:

Los Angeles’ #1 Coworking office space

Introducing BLANKSPACES, a modern, flexible workspace that inspires creativity, promotes occupational freedom, and builds collaborative communities. A place where well-designed form meets well-appointed function. Available by-the-day, monthly, or year-to-year.

BLANKSPACES is specifically designed to meet your changing professional needs and change the way you think about where you work. Whether you are looking for Office Space or a Virtual Office in Los Angeles, we invite you to Work Wide Open. Take us up on a free trial today!

I’ve tried them out and they are fantastic. They are a bit far for me personally (hint, hint. Open a South Bay location!), but lately I’ve been considering a part-time plan just to get out amongst other creatives.

Another spot, not open yet, is The CoLoft in Santa Monica. From their website:

We are a community driven endeavor that has never really been a fan of the whole “corporate” atmosphere. Stuffy suits, stuffy bosses, and worst of all, stuffy environments.

We believe that work, and work environments, should be enjoyable. Most of us spend more time working than anything else, so why should it be anything but that? That’s why we created the CoLoft. The main theme here is that we work better together, not alone. The CoLoft is a place where you can come in to get some work done, run your business, and converse with like-minded people. It’s a place for entrepreneurs, freelancers, designers, developers, artists, small business owners, and more. At Coloft people come to work, network, and prosper.

Follow BLANKSPACES on Twitter, as well as The Coloft. If there are more, let me know with replies on our Twitter account.

Yes, it’s that time again folks. Our monthly Get Geeky South Bay meetup. We had 2 new faces last month and had a really great time. I’d really love to see some more new faces, so if you are interested at all, come on down!

We are a gathering of geeks, but the term is loosely applied here. We are from diverse backgrounds such as web design, copywriting, 3D graphics, cognitive engineering and more. We are freelancers as well as those still stuck working for the man.

The purpose of the Get Geeky is to bring people from various tech/design/creative pursuits in the south of Los Angeles into one spot to hopefully spur conversation, friendship and work.

Here is a short list of fellow Get Geeky members, starting with myself:

Kelly

What is the Get Geeky? It’s a casual gathering of creative and technology minded folks in the South Bay Los Angeles area. A place to meet, make friends, start business relationships, hang out. It’s a place to talk shop, with people who might actually understand what you’re saying for a change.

Who are we? So far, we are web designers, copywriters, UI designers, engineers, graphic designers, freelancers and more.
